Doesn't the Black United Fund duplicate the United Way?

No. We serve organizations and needs outside the traditional funding institutional objectives. Primarily, the small start-up and emerging programs seek alternative funding sources like The Black United Fund of Michigan, Inc..


What is meant by the definition of "Alternative Funding"?
Alternative Funding are those funds and resources made available through non- traditional funding organizations. Today, The Black United Fund of Michigan, Inc. is now considered a "Fund of Choice" for start-up organizations and programs. The Black United Fund of Michigan, Inc., along with a few others, spearheaded the alternative fund movement in 1970.


What are the advantages of diversified donor opportunities in the workplace?
Overall employee donor participation and total donations increase. Employees feel more involved in the community giving process. More resources become available for the community. Company's positive image as an employer is enhanced.


Who determines the allocations of resources?
Requests for funds and/or services are submitted to the BUF Board of Directors/Screening Committee. They review all written proposals. Contact the The Black United Fund of Michigan, Inc. office regarding deadline dates.


Does BUF provide services other than annual allocations?
Yes. Through referrals, consultative service to individuals and groups who desire to initiate community programs. BUF also provides professional assistance in proposal development.


What percentage of the Black United Fund's resources goes to administrative or personnel costs?
Although Federal Law allows 25% for administrative overhead, The Black United Fund of Michigan, Inc. spends approximately 9-12% with little or no "in kind services" support for operational costs.


Is there a National Affiliate Organization?
Yes, there are twenty cities currently involved in the national organization. NBUF (National Black United Fund) is primarily an information sharing-support group rather than the traditional franchise operation.


Who receives the funds raised by Black United Fund?
BUF supported organizations collectively reflect the different needs of our community - from the displaced homeless and at risk children, to the elderly.


Why is BUF called the "Fund of Choice" or "Charity of Choice"?
As new community programs find fewer and fewer support opportunities, BUF for many, has become a first choice - "The Charity of Choice."
